Abstract

1,127,867. Jet propulsion nozzles. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. Sept.20, 1966 [Sept. 21, 1965], No.41925/66. Heading F1J. A jet propulsion nozzle comprises an outer wall 5 and an inner centre body 1 which together define an annular flow path, the centre body comprising a portion 3 of maximum diameter which is followed by a portion 4 of decreasing diameter. The nozzle comprises also a series of flaps 6 pivotally mounted at 7 on the wall 5 for adjusting the area of the nozzle throat, the flaps extending downstream of the portion 3 of the centre body of maximum diameter and forming therewith a convergent - divergent nozzle portion. The general direction of discharge of the divergent portion of the nozzle is convergent in the direction of jet flow. The centre body comprises also an upstream portion of increasing diameter in the direction of flow. The nozzle comprises also an outer fairing member 11 on which a further series of flaps 8 pivotally is mounted at 9. The flaps 6 are shown in two positions 6 1 and 6 2 , 6 1 being the position for take-off without reheat operation and 6 2 for takeoff with reheat operation, the boundary of the jet stream being indicated at A 1 and A 2 respectively. The flaps 8 are indicated in three operational positions, the innermost position being that for take-off, the mid position that for transonic speed and the outermost position that for supersonic cruising speed, the jet boundary for the latter two phases being indicated at B and C respectively.
