Abstract
1,127.548. Device for use at partrintion. J. D. CHARTERS and R. S. WALKER. 10 April, 1967, No. 16242/67. Heading A5R. For reducing the number and severity of perineal tears to a woman during childbirth, a surgical device comprises a member of elastic. for example rubber, material which is shaped to fit the perineun posterior so as to be situated behind and at the sides of the entrance to the vagina and to extend as far back as the anus, one surface of the member having thereon adhesive suitable to adhere the member to the perineum. The member is symmetrical about a line which in use of the device is intended to lie upon the imaginary line passing through the centres of the vagina and anus, the degree of stretch of the member increasing progressively on either side of this line in a direction at right angles thereto; the variation in stretch may be obtained by selectively altering the properties of the material from which the member is made, but preferably is achieved by selectively varying the thickness of the member, as illustrated in Figure 1, wherein one surface of a shaped and surface-contoured member 14 is covered with a layer 15 of adhesive transfer tape, which preferably is provided with pull tabs 16 to allow the tape to be removed from and the adhesive to remain on the member. The device comprising member and adhesive transfer tape preferably is sealed in a double plastics container, the container and device contained therein preferably being sterilized by gamma radiation; alternatively, the device may be sterilized by exposure for example to formaldehyde gas.
