Abstract
1,125,247. Epoxy resin composition. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V: 2 June, 1967, No. 25488/67. Heading C3B. An epoxy resin composition has a viscosity between 90 and 150 poises at 25‹ C. and a volatility content (i.e. the percentage of volatile components lost after heating for 3 hours at 140‹ C., DIN 16945, August, 1966) of <0À3% by wt. It comprises: (A) a liquid polyglycidyl ether of diphenylolpropane (DPP) obtained by reacting from 4 to 8 moles of epichlorohydrin with 1 mole of DPP; and (B) from 0À5-10% by wt. of (A) of a reactive diluent having a viscosity of < 20 poises at 25‹ C. and a " volatility value " of < 25 which may be either a glycidyl ester of a monocarboxylic acid, which acid has at least 12 carbon atoms, e.g. glycidyl laurate, or a glycidyl ether of a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane. Volatility value is defined as (Vc-Vr)/D, where Vc is the volatility content of the composition, Vr is the volatility content of the liquid polyglycidyl ether per se and D is the concentration of the reactive diluent in per cent by weight based on the polyglycidyl ether of DPP. The compositions of the invention have a much reduced tendency to crystallize on storage compared with conventional polyglycidyl ethers of DPP using a higher proportion of epichlorohydrin. They may be cured with conventional hardener to give products having high heat distortion temperatures.
