Abstract

Hydrogen and/or oxygen are removed from a gaseous mixture containing both by passing the gas through the gas-flow channels of a supported catalyst, the support of which comprises a catalytically inert unitary essentially crystalline refractory structure having a bulk density of from 0.45 to 1.05 grams per c.c. and a plurality of gas-flow channels extending therethrough and the catalyst deposited on the surfaces of said channels and on superficial macropores of said structure which communicate with said channels being an activated refractory metal oxide on which has been deposited platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium or an alloy or mixture of two or more of these. Free oxygen can be removed from gases such as H2, D2, N2, He, A, Ne and combination with hydrogen and H2 can be removed from O2, N2, He, A and Ne by combination with O2, the H2 or O2 required to remove the other may be added if it is not originally present in the stoichiometric amount required. The reaction may be carried out at between -20 and 100 DEG C. at a space velocity of 10-106 standard volumes of gas per volume of catalyst per hour. The preferred supports are zircon-mullite and alpha alumina and may be prepared as described in Specification 882,484, and the preferred refractory oxides are of the gamma or activated alumina family. The supported catalyst is described in Specification 1,052,105. A gaseous mixture of oxygen together with H2 and/or D2 formed by radiolytic dissociation of H2O and/or D2O used as a moderator/coolant in a nuclear reaction may be combined using the catalyst.
