Abstract

1,123,089. Shell base. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. 14 Nov., 1966 [17 Nov., 1965; 14 May, 1966], No 50900/66. Heading F3A. A shell base comprising a central electrical contact 8 and a shaped plate 4a of combustible material, resilient about bends 5 and 6, coated with a layer 4b of metal, is resiliently supported by a shoulder 4g in a chamber 2 of a gun barrel 1, into which is inserted a caseless charge 3. The metal layer 4b is earthed to the gun barrel in the location of the collar 4g. A priming charge 9, a boosting charge 10 and a propagation charge 11 are retained in a frusto-conical recess in the plate 4a by a combustible cover 7. When the charge 3 is to be fired, a countercontact 12 in a sliding wedge-type breech block 13 is brought to bear resiliently against the contact 8 and an electrical current passed therethrough. The shell base may otherwise be fitted on to one end of a cylindrical, combustible shell case (14), Fig. 2 (not shown), in the location of the bends (6). Alternatively, the shell base is formed integral with a shell case (16), Fig. 4, and receives a primer (18) in an orifice (19). The earthed metal layer is applied in the shape of a ring (17).
