Abstract

A tobacco smoke filtering element comprises a polyvinyl aromatic thermoplastic resin in the form of a fibre assembly, that is a three-dimensional structure of a multiplicity of interconnecting thermoplastic fibre elements, the fibre elements being aligned substantially in a similar direction and some of them having cross-sections that are branched. Preferably the resin is a polystyrene and may be a polymer or copolymer of a vinyl aromatic monomer, such as styrene, a chlorostyrene, vinyl-toluene or a -methylstyrene. A co-polymer can be one of a vinyl aromatic monomer with another olefinic monomer, for example acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate or ethyl acrylate.
