Spherical - trigonometry calculators.- The time of transit of stars is determined, and those upon any required hour circle are identified, by means of a star map and relatively adjustable circular scales of right ascension and date. Within an annular ring a, graduated in time on the edge c, from 0 to 24 hours, is an adjustable rotary disk b bearing a projection of the stars of one polar hemisphere and of the declination-belt of the opposite hemisphere up to 40 degrees declination. The edge d of this disk is also graduated in time from 0 to 24 hours, against which are placed the dates e, f of the year upon which the true and the mean suns have the right ascensions shown upon the time scale. Radial arrows g from stars of first and second magnitudes indicate their right ascensions, and the declinations for a given epoch, with the variations for both, are given. If the date of the year be brought opposite zero upon the outermost scale, the reading against the radius from any star to the same scale will indicate the true or mean local time of the star's meridian passage, according to which date is set. A slotted radial pointer m, bearing a declination scale, enables the meridian zenith distance of a star to be reckoned if the latitude is known. A similar projection and scales for the opposite hemisphere are provided upon the opposite face of the apparatus.
