Abstract

1,118,722. Shrink packaging; trays. ALLEN DAVIES & CO. Ltd. 11 Oct., 1965 [13 Oct., 1964; 28 Dec., 1964; 19 Jan., 1965], Nos. 41780/64, 52566/64 and 2310/65. Headings B8C and B8P. Articles 20 such as cylindrical cans, jars &c are packaged by placing them in a cardboard tray having generally rounded corners and wall portions 13 which are unattached to the base portion and flexible so as to conform to the contour of the articles in the corner of the tray, a thermoplastic wrapper 21 being heat-shrunk around the tray and contents. The tray is formed from a blank (Fig. 3, not shown), in which opposite pairs of walls (2), joined to the base-forming portion (1) through folding lines (3), may have extensions (13), which, on raising the wall portions to form the walls of the tray, are connected to the other wall portions (4), Fig. 4 (not shown). In further embodiments one or both pairs of opposite walls may be double, and the end portions of the wall extensions may be secured in adjacent double walls either by a tongue-andslot arrangement or by retaining the wall in the folded (upstanding) position by means of tongues and slots and sliding the wall extension between the two parts of the double wall. The flexible corner portions may be joined to the adjacent wall panels so as to allow a degree of movement between the joined parts. The walls of the tray may be perpendicular to the base, or sloped inwardly or outwardly, dependent upon the shape of the articles. Each wall may slope outwardly over its lower portion and inwardly over its upper portion. Handles may be provided on one or more wall panels. A liner of corrugated cardboard may be provided within the tray, recessed to receive the bottoms of the articles. Articles may be stacked in two tiers with one wrapper shrunk around both tiers, or two trays full of articles may be wrapped together. A second tray may be inverted over the tops of the articles within the wrapper.
