An engraving or scribing tool consists of a holder 14 comprising a conical front member 15 of hardened steel fitted into a sleeve 19 which projects into a sleeve 20 in a manner such as to provide a double wall in the central zone of the holder, and a cap 25 screwed on to the sleeve 20; and an inner member comprising a pointed and sharpenable engraving or scribing member 2 of hard steel alloy or sintered material fitted after heat-shrinking into a supporting piece 3 screwed into a central piece 5 on to which is fitted an end piece 6. The inner member is placed in the holder with the member 2 slidable in a bore 16 in the member 15, and the member 2 is projected into operative position by a pressure pin 27 slidable in the cap and engaging the end piece 6, a button 31 on a spring tongue 20 on the pin engaging in a recess 32 in the cap to hold the inner member in projected position. On pressing in laterally a clip 33 carrying a nose 34, the button 31 is released and the inner member is retracted by a spring 18. To compensate for reduction in length of the member 2 after re-sharpening, the inner member is adjustable in length by relative rotation of the parts 3, 5. Alternatively, the holder may be adjustable by screwing the two sleeves into each other and producing relative rotation thereof, the inner member being non-adjustable.
