Abstract

1,115,890. Vehicle suspension. MONROE AUTO EQUIPMENT CO. 10 March. 1967, No. 11435/67. Heading B7D. In a motor vehicle independent suspension, the piston-rod 15 of a tubular hydraulic vibration damper is detachably connected at its upper end to a bearing 29 resiliently mounted in the vehicle body. The cylinder part of the damper comprises a pair of concentric tubes 67, 65, mounted within a tube 16, being positioned by means of a cap member 75 of the cylinder and the threaded end 18 of a ball joint member 17 which co-operates with a socket member 14 detachably secured to a suspension arm. The wheel spindle 19 has a sleeve 23 secured to the lower end of the tube 16. The suspension coil spring 26 is located between an upper support member 30 clamped between the bearing 29 and a shoulder on the piston-rod 15, and a lower support 28 welded to the tube 16. By removing the nut 35 at the upper end of the piston rod and the ball joint member 17 from the tube 16, the vibration damper may be readily removed from the vehicle, the suspension spring 26 being retained between the bearing 29 and the member 28. Damping orifices controlled by flap valves are provided in the piston 85. Orifices closed by flap valves are also located in a member 73 closing the lower end of the inner cylinder 67, the space below the member 73 being connected with the space between cylinders 65 and 67 through apertures 69. The orifices in the piston 85 impede its upward and downward movement in the cylinder, and those in the member 73 permit the flow of fluid to and from the space between the cylinders 65 and 67 to compensate for the differences in volume above and below the piston due to the piston-rod. To cushion the impact at the ends of the piston stroke, resilient members 143 and 150 are" provided A guide member 81 having an absorbent, resilient sleeve 83 is provided at the upper end of the inner cylinder 67, the sleeve being kept moist by liquid passing through apertures in the member 143. A removable cap 49 protects the bearing 29 and the vibration damper is protected by a member 152.
