Abstract

1,109,456. Photo-electric burner control. ELECTRONICS CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Aug. 27, 1965 [Sept. 4, 1964], No. 36892/65. Heading G1A. [Also in Division F4] A burner control system is made to fail safe by periodically chopping the radiation from the flame falling on a detector 20. Thus when a flame is detected relay 24 is repeatedly energized and de-energized; in one state capacitor 44 is charged from a power source 40 and capacitor 46 is discharged through a relay 32, and in the other state capacitor 46 is charged and 44 discharged through the relay. Relay 32 is maintained energized by the repeated discharges to keep contacts 34 closed and the burner fuel valve 16 open. If the flame fails relay 24 remains de-energized and when 44 has discharged relay 32 drops out to close valve 16. If a fault develops whereby a flame signal is generated even when the cell 20 is unilluminated relay 24 remains energized and again valve 16 is closed. In a modification relay 32 is replaced by a double winding relay with the junction between the windings connected to the point 52, Fig. 2 (not shown). This permits the insertion of a resistance to make the discharge time of the capacitors 44 and 46 different. The relay 24 may be replaced by a switching transistor, Fig. 3 (not shown), or alternately illuminated photo-resistors.
