Abstract
Novel steroids of the formula <FORM:1108563/C2/1> (wherein Y is H2, H(#xOH) or O; Z is a H (b COCH3), a H(b CHOX.CH3), H(b OX) or O where X is H or acyl; R1 is C1- 6 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl; R2 is C1- 6 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl; or NR1R2 is a saturated heterocyclic amino radical; R3 is H or acyl; and R4 is H or C1- 6 alkyl) are prepared from the corresponding 3a -halo steroids and the appropriate amines. The 3a -halo steroids may in turn be prepared from the corresponding D 2-steroids and hypohalous acids or reagents yielding them. Alternatively, the 2b -hydroxy-3a -halo-steroids may be treated with alkali to give the 2b ,3b -epoxides and these then reacted with the appropriate amine. In the products carbonyl groups may be reduced to hydroxy groups and these esterified. The esters may subsequently be hydrolysed. The products may also be converted to acid-addition salts and quaternary ammonium derivatives. The steroids of the invention, which are stated to be c.n.s. stimulants, may be made up into pharmaceuticals or veterinary compositions with suitable carriers.
