Abstract

[Also in Division H3] An adjustable attenuating arrangement for a companded P.C.M. coder or decoder comprises a reference current source 1, attenuators 2 . . . 8 and 14, an inverter 9, and an output load resistance 10. Each of the attenuators 2 ... 8 is switchable by a line 11 between two states of attenuation, one of the states of the attenuators 2, 3, 4 being zero attenuation and one of the states of attenuators 5, 6, 7 being infinite attenuation. The other states of the attenuators 2 ... 7 are <SP>1</SP>/a<SP>4</SP>, <SP>1</SP>/a<SP>2</SP>, 1/a, a, <SP>1</SP>/ 2, <SP>1</SP>/4, where " a " is a constant multiplying factor. If the arrangement is used in a coder, attenuator 8 has one state of infinite attenuation and the other state with an attenuation of <SP>1</SP>/8; whereas for a decoder the two states are <SP>1</SP>/16 and <SP>3</SP>/16 The attenuator 14 has a single attenuation value of <SP>1</SP>/8 for a coder and <SP>1</SP>/16 for a decoder. The inverter 9 controlled by a line 12 changes the sign of the current fed to the resistance 10, if desired, the voltage across the resistance being read out at terminals 15, 16. In use the attenuators 2, 3, 4, 5 are combined in simple combinations to obtain attenuation values lying on a logarithmic curve at points B, C ... H, J (Fig. 2, not shown), these points being in geometrical progression with a multiplication factor of "a." The straight line portions of the curve between adjacent points B, C and C, D &c., may be subdivided into eighths by the attenuators 6, 7, 8.
