Abstract

1,107,932. Piston packing; seals. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938) Ltd. 26 Jan., 1967 [13 April, 1966], No. 16150/66. Headings F2B and F2T. Sealing means between coaxial cylindrical surfaces of two relatively static or relatively movable members, e.g. a piston 3 and a cylinder 1, comprises a ring 6 of circular section wire which is housed in a polygonal section groove 4 in one of the surfaces and engages the other surface 2. As shown in Fig. 1, the piston 3 has three grooves 4 each having a base 5 and two outwardly diverging frusto-conical sides 7, 8 and housing a ring 6 making linear contact with the base and sides. In the modification indicated by dotted lines the grooves are of V-section. In a further modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), each groove (24) has two parallel sides (30, 31) which extend radially outwardly from the outer edges of the frusto-conical sides (27, 28) and are spaced apart by a distance greater than the diameter of the wire ring 26. Instead of a separate rings and grooves, a helix of two or more turns of circular crosssection wire ring may be housed in a helical groove.
