Abstract

1,106,198. Moulding solid tyres. ARCHIBALD KENRICK & SONS Ltd. 31 Oct., 1966 [7 Dec., 1965], No. 51747/65. Heading. B5A. [Also in Division A4] A rubber tyre 44 is bonded by heat and pressure to the rim 18 of a die cast, zinc, base alloy castor wheel, in a two-part mould which provides support for the rim to prevent deformation. The wheel consists of a hollow hub 10 receiving a shaft of a castor body and connected by a dished, ribbed web 20 to the rim 18, which has a frusto-conical outer surface and cylindrical surfaces 28, 30. The wheel is positioned in the stationary mould-part with the surface 30 abutting a cylindrical support surface of the mould, an uncured preform for the tyre is positioned around the rim 18, and the second mould-part having a cylindrical support surface for the surface 28 is moved into position for compression and fusion of the preform. The mould is shaped so that fused rubber flows along the sides of the rim and on to the surfaces 28, 30. A decorative cover is press-fitted into engagement with the surface 28 to hide the finish line of the rubber on that surface, the cover having a hollow boss which facilitates its handling through finishing vats, and passes through an aperture provided therefore in the web.
