Abstract
a -Keto glutaric acid is produced by the aerobic culturing of a microorganism of a strain capable of producing a -keto glutaric acid in a nutrient medium containing a C10- 25 n-paraffin or a C10- 25 n-paraffin-containing petroleum fraction, the medium being stirred and its pH being maintained at 5-8, accumulating a -keto glutaric acid in the medium and separating the acid so produced. Preferred strains are those of the genera Corynebacterium, Brevibacterium, Anthrobacter and Micrococcus. The nutrient medium may also include a source of nitrogen, e.g. ammonium salts or urea, and organic nutrients, e.g. peptones, corn steep liquors, meat extracts, hydrolysates of soybean meals, yeast extracts, amino acids, organic nucleic bases, and vitamins, e.g. thiamine. It is preferred to include calcium carbonate in the nutrient medium. In examples, dodecane, C12- 14 and C11- 19 n-paraffin mixtures and kerosene are used as the carbon source.
