Abstract

A washing machine comprises a vertical basket 2 rotatably mounted in a water tank 1 and made up of two parallel walls 101, 102 connected by arcuate walls 103, 104 and an impeller 3 at the centre of the basket 2 mounted on a shaft 49 rotatable at high speed within a hollow shaft 46 secured to the basket there being provided means for releasably connecting the hollow shaft to the impeller shaft 49, braking means operating on the hollow shaft resilient means mounting the tank 1 in a framework 4 which last means, during operation, convert part of the vibration energy by friction into heat and means for retaining water amounting to 15-45% of the volume of the basket when spin-drying starts. The washing machine is as described in Specifications 1,096,902 and 1,096,903 and the water is retained in the basket 2 and tank 1 by limiting the draining time allowed in the programme.
