Abstract

1,096,725. Filter. ZURN INDUSTRIES Inc. April 14, 1966, No. 16428/66. Heading BID. A liquid filter consists of a screen 14, which covers a 240‹ arc of a cylinder, is located in a housing with inlet 12 and outlet 13 and is cleaned by reverse flow when a backwash arm 29, connected to drain, is oscillated to cover succesive sections of its inside, upstream surface. In Fig. 2 the screen 14 is perforated stainless steel and has axial corrugations which resilient seals 18 on arm 29 bridge, so that while one corrugation is being backwashed by the pressure in outlet 13 the two adjacent corrugations are closed altogther by seals 18. The vertical axis of screen 14 is located upstream of the axis of the housing. In Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) the screen (114) is wire mesh, and drive motor (115) is reversed by a limit switch (145') at the ends of the backwash arm movement. Motor (115) may be disconnected by removing shear pin (131) and the backwash arm rotated by applying a wrench to end (132a) of the shaft (125). In Fig. 6 (not shown) the corrugated screen of Figs. 1 .. 5 is replaced by an arcuate screen of wire mesh, backed by perforate sheet and divided by vertical fins (226) on its inside face into segments for successive backwashing. The filter may be used downstream of a primary filter, for river water &c. Cleaning may be initiated by a timer, by pressure-differential sensing means or by a human operator.
