Abstract

109,567. Brown, W., and Brown, W. Jan. 22, 1917. Suction apparatus.-In a suction dredger, automatic or manually operated means are provided to maintain the dredging head at the desired inclination to the ground during the dredging operation notwithstanding variation of the dredging depth. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the dredging head 3 is so balanced that it tends to force stops 9 against stops 10; the stops 10 are connected through toggle links and an adjustable rod 13 to a lever 15 so connected to the suction pipe 1 that, when the inclination of the suction pipe 1 is varied, the position of the stops 10 is automatically adjusted so that the dredging head remains at the desired inclination relatively to the ground. In a modification, the rod 13 and lever 15 are replaced by a rope passing over a pulley on the pipe 1 to a fixed point. In a further modification, a stop 10 is carried by a plunger in an hydraulic cylinder and is controlled manually from the dredging vessel. Specification 11524/09 is referred to.
