A packer 10 at the bottom of a refuse shoot 16 of a multilevel building has an outlet opening 34 aligned with an inlet opening of a wheeled container 12 releasably connected to the packer for receipt of refuse, the container having projecting parallel bars for engagement by lifting elements of a self-loading vehicle 22 into which refuse, compacted in the container, is periodically emptied. Refuse, gravity fed into a hopper 20 is sensed by interruption of a light beam of a photo-electric control 160 which automatically energizes a pump motor supplying hydraulic fluid to a cylinder 66 to operate a reciprocating compaction blade 42 through levers and links 54, 90, the blade being retracted, to allow refuse to drop into the packer, and then advanced so that a ram surface 44 presses the refuse into the container, the operation continuing so long as refuse remains in the hopper. Hydraulic and electric circuits controlling the operation are described. A pressure responsive switch retracts the blade 42 if it encounters an obstruction and an alarm may be given. The shoot has access doors 18 at each level of the building and an access door in a housing for the packer so that refuse may be placed in the hopper. The container 12, mounted on swivellable wheels, has a hinged, latched lid for a top opening through which refuse is dumped into the vehicle 22, an upwardlly curving baffle to aid composition, and hooks for engagement with chains mounted on pivotable locking levers on the packer. A screen of stretched springs closes the inlet aperture of the container during travel to the vehicle. Entrance of refuse behind the packer blade is prevented by a pivoted baffle plate 60. In a modification the plate 60 is replaced by a pair of overlapping pivoted plates.
