Planing; slotting; lathes.-An intermittent feed motion for planing and slotting machines and lathes comprises a shaft C driven through a friction clutch from an electro motor and connected or geared to a sleeve H carrying a series of disks J having varying numbers of teeth K co-operating with a pawl L adjustable along a square bar M according to the amount of feed required. The bar is carried by a frame N rocked about an axis P to bring the pawl into and out of operation as controlled by a solenoid T in series with the electro motor. On reversal of the machine, an arm W frictionally mounted on the shaft carrying the reduced velocity reversing-dog disk Y closes the motor and solenoid circuit at 3, thus imparting the feed. On reversal at the other end of the stroke, the arm, whose movement is limited by opposed stops 7, breaks the circuit, thus resetting the parts ready for a further feed at the next reversal. According to the Provisional Specification, the invention is applicable for the spacing mechanism of gear-cutting machines. The apparatus may be applied to a largo face-plate lathe where a kicking feed is used actuated by a lever making a number of picks per revolution to operate pawl and ratchet mechanism.
