Abstract

In the electrolytic reduction of fused salts, e.g. in the production of aluminium from a melt of cryolite and alumina, by applying a D.C. voltage between the cathode and an anode comprising separately adjustable carbons, alternating voltage amplitude variations within a frequency range up to 20 c/s caused by one or more carbons being closer to the cathode than the others are detected and the said one or more carbons are then moved away from the cathode to reduce the voltage variations. Typically in addition to the expanded scale D.C. voltmeter and lamp connected across the cell for indicating the condition of the cell under steady conditions and also when anode effect occurs, there is connected in parallel across the cell an amplifier integrating circuit including a low-pass filter, the circuit converting the alternating voltage to an output current in milliamps proportional to the voltage amplitude in the chosen frequency range. This output current is measured by an expanded scale ammeter which is arranged when a selected value is exceeded to turn on an indicator light, warning of need for adjustment.
