Abstract
1,092,821. Radio navigation. R. T. CELLA. Jan. 15, 1965, No. 1992/65. Heading H4D. In an aircraft landing system echo pulses from fixed reflectors 12, 13 one on either side of runway 11 are received utilizing at least one radar in aircraft 10 which incorporates timing means determining the ranges R 1 , R 2 to the reflectors, means producing an output signal representing R 1 R 2 , and a member responsive thereto and representing the deviation from the correct approach path. In one embodiment Fig. 2, two pulse radars are carried operating on different carrier frequencies f 1 , f 2 the reflectors being similarly responsive. A third radar receiver 40 affords a height-representative signal H and a signal representing the slant range R to the forward end of the runway is obtained by subtracting a known distance from range R 2 , the ratio H/R actuating a glide path indicator 47. The pilot's display panel, Fig. 4 (not shown), incorporates a combined left-right/up-down meter, a meter indicating range R and three lamps: when range R is less than a predetermined value a green light is shown, when R becomes zero that light is extinguished and a blue light is shown by utilizing a marker beacon, and when the aircraft has traversed a given length of the runway the blue light is extinguished and a red light is energized; if the aircraft has not touched ground by this time the red light warns that insufficient runway remains for safe landing. An automatic pilot may be provided. A single radar may be utilized, echoes from the two reflectors being separated by appropriate coding thereat. A third radar may be carried for determining range R, there being a reflector at the leading edge of the runway.
