Abstract

1,092,565. Motor vehicle suspension units. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. May, 20, 1966, No. 22537/66. Heading F2S. In a telescopic motor vehicle suspension system of the kind known as the Macpherson suspension in which a double-tube piston and cylinder damper unit having an annular reservoir between the tubes (6), (7), Fig. 1, not shown is secured to a hub carrier (2) at its lower end and to the spring part of the vehicle through a piston rod (8), a ball bearing (2), and a rubber bush (11), at its upper end, a suspension coil spring (5) being compressed between the sprung part of the vehicle and a cup member (12) on the outer cylinder (7), the double-tube unit (6), (7) is replaced by a single tube unit 3 as shown and the piston rod 2, which is wider than the rod (8). is hollow to form a reservoir chamber. The piston 9 has valved passages 23 for flow of liquid in either direction, and valued passages for liquid to flow into and out of the hollow piston rod 8 the upper end of which is closed by a plastics filling cap 25. The rod 8 passes through an annular seal 28, a journal bearing 27 in a bushing 26, an upper annular seal 29 with two sealing lips, and a collar 30, a small reservoir 32 being provided between the upper face of the bushing 26 and the seal 29 to collect any oil which is forced past the seal 28. The seal 29 is stronger than the seal 28 so that oil from the reservoir 32 drains back in to the working cylinder 2 through a duct 31 in the bushing and past the seal 28.
