Abstract

109,123. Maude, F. N. Sept. 20, 1916. Self-driving machines; momentum power-storing apparatus.-Relates to the utilization of centrifugal forces developed from a weight connected to an axis about which it can be rotated, and consists in movably mounting the axis in such a way that the centrifugal force of the weight pulls it away from the true centre of rotation, thereby absorbing the centrifugal force and converting it into work. Energy will thereby be developed and a part thereof employed to maintain the motion. In one form, the piston-rod B of an oscillating cylinder N is provide with a heavy bob to constitute a pendulum, the centrifugal force of which acts against a spring R under the piston. Through the trunnions O, air or liquid is admitted at one side (for example through the passage O<1>) to the interior of the cylinder past a non-return valve, and upon pressure being exerted thereon by the piston, air or water is forced out under pressure through the discharge outlet O<2> into an accumulator; or such aeriform fluid under pressure may be utilized in any other desired manner. Another form consists of a revolving weighted arm attached to the guided end of a lever which is linked to a ratchet lever. In order to make the circular motion of the weight continuous, any suitable mechanical or electric means may be provided to impart an impulse just as the weight arrives at the zenith; for example a part of the energy stored up or obtained through the lever may be employed to operate a spring arm with trigger release. The ratchet lever operates a barrel winding up a cord from which a weight is suspended.
