A tool case contains recesses (6), Fig. 2 (not shown), in which the tools are removably held, the recesses conforming to the shape of the tools and formed in a rigid member (5), secured to a rigid tray (1), each tool 15 &c. being gripped between one rigid wall (13) of the recess and a resilient member (12) associated with an opposite wall (10). The member (12) may be in the form of a block or slab of natural or synthetic rubber secured within the wall (10) having holes (11) into which one end of each tool 15 &c. projects. The wooden tray (1), has its outer surface covered with a hard abrasion resistant synthetic material (3), preferably in the form of a sheet cemented to the tray. Corner pieces (4) are glued to the inside of the tray (1). The member (5) is preferably formed from a single sheet of synthetic material. The wall (13) has an upper lip (14) which assists in holding heavy tools in position. To avoid damage, the member (12) may be covered with a metal plate or mesh. Certain tools, for example box spanners 19, may be retained in position by a rotatable cover-plate 20. In a modification, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the resilient member is a spring- pressed cup (23). To simplify the forming of the rigid member (5), certain adjoining recesses (6) may be connected by narrow recessed por. tions and a pair of trays (1) may be hinged together facing each other to form a portable tool case.
