Abstract

During pouring of fully killed steel into an ingot mould, solid slag, which contains a major proportion chosen from silica, calcium oxide and manganese oxide, is mixed intimately with the steel so as to precipitate out from the melt non-metallic compounds by the cooling effect of the slag, the floating layer of slag &c. being then separated from the melt. The slag may be added to a vessel immediately prior to the entry of the melt into the central runner of an ingot mould or group of moulds.
