Abstract

Lever-actuated pumps; stroke, varying; air. trapping and removing; air vessels; flexible-chamber pumps.-In a pump of the kind comprising a tubular chamber, such as a Bourdon tube, supplied with liquid through a non-return valve and subjected to a bending or distorting action which varies the volume of the tube, the tubular chamber A is fed through the inlet valve C with liquid under pressure. The chamber A may be in the form of a Bourdon tube, the closed end of which is reciprocated by a cam or eccentric and lever provided with means for 'varying the stroke: or the tube may be coiled round to a central point and torque applied at the end; or a straight or slightly curved tube may be used and the pumping action produced by bending at the middle or at one end or by twisting. The stroke may be varied by providing the actuating lever, which is oscillated by a cam F, with a rod h having a slot h<4> engaged by a pin j on an adjustable arm J. The pin i may also be adjustable in a slot in the arm J. In another form, the fulcrum of the lever is adjustable automatically or by hand. An airtrap may be provided near the delivery valve D and consists of a chamber E separated from the tube A by a lightly loaded valve c, and containing two perforated plugs e<1>, e<2>. A tubular accumulator A<1> may be mounted on the delivery pipe 0 to maintain the delivery pressure. The tube A is prevented from vibrating by a damping device which may consist of a strip K of wood bound on the tube. A relief valve may be provided on the pump body B. Two or more pumps may be arranged in series to give a very high delivery pressure.
