Abstract
1,085,559. Surgical clips. PARKE, DAVIS & CO. March 11, 1966, No. 10929/66. Heading ASR. A surgical clip 10 comprises jaws 12, 22 made of or coated with a metal which is low in the electromotive series, e.g. silver, the jaws being interconnected by means, e.g. an apertured rivet 36, of a metal or alloy which is relatively highly placed in the electromotive series, e.g. alloys of aluminium or magnesium, so that when the clip is placed in the body it forms a galvanic couple with body fluids present and the rivet will disintegrate to release closing pressure on the jaws before the jaws disintegrate. Disintegration of the rivet occurs after a time determined by the material chosen. Each jaw has prongs 18, 28 for engaging body tissue and holes 20 for receiving holding prongs 50 (Figure 3, not shown) of a clip applicator. In an alternative construction the whole clip is made of the less solution-resistant material and is bent to a U-shape, the clip being plated with the more solution-resistant material, except for a portion in the region of the hinge. The clip may have one jaw 100 (Figure 5, not shown) which tapers from the hinge portion 140 and one jaw 120 which flares from the hinge portion.
