Abstract

The invention comprises pigment dyes having the general formula <FORM:1083315/C4-C5/1> or <FORM:1083315/C4-C5/2> in which Z is the coloured residue of a non-azo dye, n is at least one, A is a simple or condensed aromatic or heterocyclic system consisting of not more than four aromatic rings, the two -CO- groups being attached to A in ortho- or peri-positions, R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or heterocyclic radical or a substitution product thereof or is itself the radical of a dye molecule e.g. an anthraquinonyl or carbazolyl radical, and R2 is a divalent aliphatic, aromatic, or aliphatic or heterocyclic radical. The invention comprises also azo-pigment dyes containing in the molecule at least one of the groups <FORM:1083315/C4-C5/3> or <FORM:1083315/C4-C5/4> in which A, R1 and R2 are as defined above. The pigment dyes are prepared by reacting non-azo dyes of the general formula <FORM:1083315/C4-C5/5> or azo dyes which contain at least one group of the formula <FORM:1083315/C4-C5/6> with ammonia, a primary mono-amine or a primary di-amine. The residue Z may be derived from dyes of the anthraquinone phthalocyanine, indigo and thio indigo series and the hemiquinoid dye groups for example mono amino anthraquinone and diamino anthraquinone. The azo pigments may be mono- or dis-azo products with the cyclic imido group in the diazo or coupling constituent of the dye molecule. In examples: (1) 4-amino naphthalic acid anhydride is diazotized and coupled with 2 - (21,31 - hydroxy naphthoyl amino) toluene or with 4,41-di-(aceto acetyl amino)-3,31-di-methyl-diphenyl and the resulting azo dyes are reacted with aniline to convert the anhydro groups present to the imido groups; (3) 3-(p-amino benzoylamino)-naphthalic acid anhydride is diazotized and coupled with the first mentioned coupler of (1) and the monoazo dye is then reacted with 3,5-dimethylaniline; (4) copper phthalocyanine tetra sulphochloride is reacted with 3-amino naphthalic acid anhydride and the corresponding imido compound is formed by reacting the product with NH3.ALSO:3-(p-Aminobenzoylamino) naphthalic acid anhydride is prepared by reacting p - nitrobenzoylchloride with 3-amino-naphthalic acid anhydride and reducing the resulting 3-(p-nitrobenzoylamino) naphthalic acid anhydride (Example 3).
