Abstract

The OH groups in cellulose may be reacted with compounds of formulae <FORM:1080739/C3/1> wherein R1 is C4- 10 tertiary alkyl, and each of R2 ...R9 is H, halogen or C1- 10 alkyl.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formulae <FORM:1080739/C2/1> wherein R1 is C4- 10 tertiary alkyl, and each of R2 . . . R9 is H, halogen or C1- 10 alkyl, and a method of making them by phosgenating the corresponding primary amines. Exemplified compounds are 2,4- and 2,6-di-t-butylphenyl isocyanates; 2 - t - butyl - 4 - X - 6 - methylphenyl isocyanates (X=H, Me or 4-NCOC6H4); and 4,41 - methylenebis - (2 - t - butyl - 6 - methyl- or -t-butylphenyl isocyanates), but many others are listed. The bis-(aminophenyl) methane starting materials are prepared by reacting CH2O with appropriately substituted anilines.ALSO:Paper is made water-resistant by treatment with compounds of formulae <FORM:1080739/D1-D2/1> wherein R1 is C4-10 tertiary alkyl, and each of R2..R9 is H, halogen or C1-10 alkyl.
