Abstract

1,077,655. Welding by pressure. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES<SP>1</SP>Ltd. Oct. 23, 1964, No. 43306/64. Addition to 910,249. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H1] In making a semi-conductor device comprising a semi-conductor element within an enclosure having a base end a cap, a flange is attached to the base to hold captive an annular cold welding die and this die and another die are used to cold pressure weld the flange to another flange on the cap. A steel ring (3), Fig. 1 (not shown) is placed on the annular region of a circular disc (1) of coppor or zircopper outside an annular groove (2) in the disc and a flanged copper collar (5) is fitted inside the ring to be suspended by an annular ridge (4) on the ring. The collar (5) then hard soldered to the disc by a solder preform in the groove (2) and a diffused silicon rectifier element soldered between two molybdenum discs is soldered to the disc (1) inside the annular groove (2). A silver or copper lead wire (10) having solid fused ends (11, 12) is soldered to the rectifier. A cap (13) is placed on the base assembly so that its copper flange (15) contacts the flange (6) on the collar (5) and the wire (10) enters a cavity (20) in a copper rod (19) attached to a nickel-ron insert (18) secured in a glass ring (17) in a steel cylinder (16) brazed to a copper cylinder (14). An annular tool cold welds the flanges (6, 15) against the ridge (4) on the ring-(3). Excess flange material removed by cropping -with a tool cooperating with -the .edge of -the ridge. The member (19) is crimped to the lead (10) and a flexible lead (23) is crimped and soldered to the member (19). The assembly is clamped to a chassis by a plate engaging the ring.
