Abstract

[Also in Divisions F1 and F2] In a container closure, an aerosol valve allowing both filling and discharge of a pressurized container comprises a cap 17 supporting a cylindrical housing 12 having a chamber 13 containing a valve member 15 spring-urged to engage an annular elastomeric seat 14, the latter being a tight fit on the tubular stem 31 of the valve member so it adopts a dish-shaped configuration when assembled. The perimeter of the upper part of the housing 12 is provided with longitudinal recesses (27) (Fig. 6, not shown), adjacent a portion 35 of the cap, and the upper end of the housing is castellated. In the closed position shown, the inner periphery of the elastomeric seat 14 seals a clearance 39 between the cap 17 and the stem 31, and the outer periphery seats on a shoulder of the housing 12. A bore 32 communicates with the interior of the stem and the space between the underside of the seat and the top of a part 30 of the valve member 15. To fill the container, a tubular filling head (44), (Fig. 3, not shown), is placed in sealing contact with a portion 35 of the cap 17 and gas initially passes into the stem 31 to depress the latter and allow gas to enter the container via the bore 32. However, once the stem has been depressed, the gas pressure acting on the annular clearance 39 depresses the seat 14 to a position where it closes the bore 32 but allows flow into the container via the castellations and recesses (27). To discharge the container, the stem is either depressed or tilted (Fig. 4, not shown), to allow the contents to escape via the bore 32. Protuberances (46 or 47), (Figs. 9 and 10, not shown), may be provided on the valve member 15 to support the seat.
