Abstract

1,073,063. Paper-making: woven fabrics. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. April 13, 1965 [April 13, 1964], No. 15784/65. Headings D1K, D2A and D2B. A soft, bulky, absorbent paper sheet is manufactured by forming an uncompacted paper web having a basis weight of 5 to 40 1bs. per 3,000 sq. ft., thermally predrying it to a fibre consistency of 30-80%, and imprinting the knuckle pattern of an imprinting fabric in the pre-dried uncompacted web at a knuckle pressure of 1,000-12,000 p.s.i. The Fourdrinier section shown has forming board 14, suction boxes 15 some of which have steam nozzles 16, and a slotted steam nozzle 18 which, together with a suction box 19, transfers the web onto an imprinting fabric 20. The fabric passes through a hot air dryer 22, around a curved axis, rotating, rubber, roll 23 to remove any wrinkles from the fabric, and feeds the paper web to an imprinting press between a Yankee drum 24 and a roll 25. The drum has adhesive 29 sprayed against it to improve the bond between the web and drum. A doctor 28 which may also crepe the paper removes the web from the drum. The fabric is washed free of fibres by sprays 26 and is dried by suction box 27. The Yankee drum may be replaced by other drying means-e.g. tunnel, steam can, festoon, or hot air dryers. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the paper web is formed directly onto the imprinting fabric. It is stated that an imprinted and creped web as produced above has greater tensile strength with more regular and uniform crepes than an otherwise similarly formed web which has not been imprinted. Various comparative examples are given of imprinted and non- imprinted creped webs. The imprinting fabric has 20-60 meshes per inch, with mono- or multi-filament strands of a diameter between .008 and .02 inches and composed of metal, or a polyamide, a vinyl, an acrylic or a polyester polymer. In a specific construction the fabric has a 34% open area, and 35 warp and weft strands per inch of .0135" diameter crimped nylon monofilament.
