Abstract

An apparatus suitable for hydrocarbon conversion comprises a vertical reactor having a lower section capable of holding a bed of catalyst, an upper section of reduced diameter compared to the lower section, a gas-liquid separator at the top of the upper section, at least one inlet at the base of the lower section of the reactor for the introduction of liquid and gas, and a line for the return of liquid from the gas-liquid separator to the inlet at the base of the reactor. The lower section may contain an expanded bed of catalyst which may comprise Cr, Mo, W, iron group and/or platinum group metals on alumina, silica-alumina, clay or zeolite. Desulphurization, denitrogenation and hydrocracking are referred to.
