Abstract
Alloy or carbon steel leaving the final roll stand passes through a water-cooling duct and is then deposited by a reel head upon a moving conveyer, the reel and conveyer forming a controlled cooling zone such that cooling of the wire is terminated shortly before it reaches the temperature at which the greatest possible formation of fine pearlite is achieved. In the apparatus disclosed the reel and conveyer are enclosed in a cooling tunnel through which air is circulated by a fan and which is provided with controllable hot and cold air inlets, the hot air being obtained by recirculation.
