Abstract

Linear polyesters (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate) are mass coloured with dyestuffs of formula <FORM:1069369/C3/1> wherein X is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl radical, Y is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical and X and Y may be connected together via a bridging atom or group through the carbon atoms in ortho-position to the -NH- group so that together they form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring (e.g. a pyrrole, pyridine or 1:4-pyrazine ring) provided that (a) at least one of X and Y contains at least one carboxylic acid group, (b) the aryl radical represented by X (or, when Y is aryl, at least one of the radicals represented by X and Y) contains a nitro group in ortho-position to the -NH- group and (c) any substituents on X and Y are not sulphonic acid groups. The duestuffs may be tumbled on to chips of the polyester (the dyestuff possibly being dispersed in water or alcohol) or alternatively the dyestuffs may be added during the preparation of the polyester. Suitable additional substituents on X and Y are chlorine, bromine, nitro, cyano, alkyl, alkoxy, akylsulphonyl, arylsulphonyl and substituted derivatives, alkyl carbonyl, aryl carbonyl and substituted derivatives, acylamino and substituted derivatives, carbonamido and N-substituted derivatives and sulphonamido and N-substituted derivatives. The dyestuffs may contain two or more groups of formula <FORM:1069369/C3/2> wherein A is an optionally further substituted aryl radical carrying the nitro group in orthoposition to the -NH- group, the two groups of the above formula being joined through the nitrogen atom of the -NH- groups by alkylene chains or aromatic rings which are themselves linked through divalent bridging atoms or groups such as -O-, -S-, -SO2-, -CO-, -NH-, -CONH- and -NHCONH-.
