Moving and changing apparatus.-Kinematographic or non-kinematographic pictures are presented to the view of a moving observer by means of a number of pictures on a background, and a slotted screen between the background and the observer. Fig. IV shows a plan of a background bearing five pictures between the points E and F, and a screen 3 having vertical slots 4 - - 4<d>, one in front of each picture. The pictures are made abnormally narrow, and an observer at A sees sections s - - s<4> of the pictures. As the observer moves, the sections of the pictures visible through the various slots are changed, as is indicated by the lines drawn from the view-point A', and continuous movements of the observer cause the sections to blend and produce a complete, normally proportioned, virtual picture which is stationary with respect to the observer. The background and screen may constitute hoardings parallel to a road or railway so that the virtual picture is visible to an observer travelling along the road, &c. Kinematographic effects mav be obtained by varying the successive pictures or by modifying the slots. For example, the slots may be inclined, successive slots being at different inclinations so that identical pictures of a pendulum produce a virtual picture in which the pendulum appears to swing. Alternatively, the slots may be inclined for a part only of their length, or be of a serpentine form which varies in successive slots. The distance between the background and screen may be different at different places so as to cause the width of the virtual picture to vary. This may be effected by making the background sinuous or by arranging the screen in lengths, the ends of which are at different distances from the background.
