Abstract

<PICT:1068177/C1/1> Carbon black is prepared by injecting a make hydrocarbon feed into a flame formed by burning a fuel gas with a slight excess of air or other free oxygen-containing gas in a tubular reactor having a Venturi configuration. The make hydrocarbon is fed through pipe 20 and is directed down the centre of reactor 11 by air fed through inlet 24 and the annular passage between pipes 20 and 18. Fuel gas is fed through inlet 23 and the annular passage between pipes 18 and 17 and passes into space 13 through holes 22. The main air supply inlet is at 14 and the air is preheated by passing between reactor 11 and housing 10. The air may be directed by rectangular vanes, as illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown), when a flame of the longitudinal type is desired, or by helical vanes, as in Fig. 4 (not shown), for a flame of the centrifugal type. These two Figures also illustrate appropriate "combustion aid devices" for each flame type in the form of a frusto-conical extension of the reactor 11 at the burner end, with louvres through which the air passes to the combustion zone. A heat shield is disposed between this extension and the end plate 16 of housing 10. The Venturi configuration is formed by a thickening of the refractory lining 12 of the reactor 11 and carbon black of improved structure &c. is obtained when the maximum temperature and turbulence of the flame is at the throat of the Venturi. The reactor is connected to a quench section 26 with water spray 29.
