Abstract
Non-flexible cellular polyurethane foam having at least 80% open cells is made by admixing: (a) a blend of polyols composed of (i) 30% to 70% by weight of the blend of at least one polyether polyol having a hydroxyl number of 350-600 and a functionality of at least 3 and (ii) 30% to 70% by weight of the blend of at least one polyether polyol having a hydroxyl number of from 30-225 and a functionality of 2 to 4, the said blend having an average hydroxyl number of 175-350 and an average functionality of 3 to 8 and (b) sufficient organic polyisocyanate to provide an NCO: OH ratio greater than 0.9: 1 and (c) 1 to 8% of water based on the weight of the polyol blend. The polyethers may be prepared by reacting an alkylene oxide with a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. glycerol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, trimethylol propane, hexanetriol, fructose, hexose, sorbitol, maltose or sucrose. The polyisocyanate may be an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or arylene diisocyanate or aromatic triisocyanate or polyalkylene-polyarylisocyanate. In Example (1) to a mixture of: 40 parts of propoxylated sucrose-glycerine having an OH number of 460 and a functionality of 5, 60 parts of propoxylated glycerine having an OH number of 56 and functionality of 3, a silicone, stannous octoate, N-ethylmorpholine and 2.0 parts of water was added a mixture of CCl3F and 71.75 parts of tolylene diisocyanate (NCo: OH ratio = 1.33) and the mass poured into a mould and allowed to foam. The product had 93% open cells.
