[Also in Division G5] Tape driving apparatus comprises a capstan for driving the tape at constant speed and variable speed auxiliary drive means at the feed and take-up sides of the apparatus for controlling the feed and take-up speeds of the tape in response to tension in the tape. Feed arrangement.-Release of tape brake 3, Fig. 1, and movement of pressure wheel 4 into contact with constant speed capstan 6 commences feed of the tape to a process station (not shown). The resulting increase in tension in the tape lifts a brake 27 from the feed reel 1 and also moves a lever 9 forming part of the pulley storage arrangement A in a clockwise direction against the action of spring 11. Thus cam 24 on lever 9 first contacts a pivoting lever 20 and via pressure wheel 16 moves the tape into contact with capstan 12 which is driven at a slower rate than capstan 6 and then subsequently into contact with capstans 13, 14 and 15 each rotating at a higher speed than its predecessor. The lever 9 finally oscillates between a position in which its cam 24 moves the tape into contact with capstan 15 which rotates at a speed greater than capstan 6 and a position in which the cam moves the tape into contact with capstan 14 which rotates at a speed below that of capstan 6. Take-up arrangement.-On commencement of feed of the tape 5 the lever 32, Fig. 2, of the pulley storage arrangement D is moved in a clockwise direction by spring 34 to take up the slack in the tape. This movement releases brake 58 of the take-up reel 2 and also moves a cam 47 on the lever into contact with pivoting lever 43 which in turn moves a roller 39 into contact with a drive wheel 35. Roller 39 is coupled to a further wheel 48 which drives the take-up reel 2 via belt 52 at a speed such that the tape take-up speed is less than the feed speed produced by capstan 6. Thus lever 32 continues moving in a clockwise direction coupling the take-up reel drive in turn to drive wheels 36, 37 and 38, each rotating at a higher speed than its predecessor. The lever finally oscillates between positions in which its cam either couples the reel drive to drive wheel 38 which produces a take-up speed greater than the feed speed or to drive wheel 37 producing a takeup speed less than the feed speed.
