Abstract
106,390. Sherriff, R. R. Aug. 31, 1916. Lever load-handling machines; screw - and - nut load - handling machines. - In carriers for transporting heavy bodies such as shells, of the kind which are mounted upon wheels and provided with suspended lifting-tongs held closed by the weight of the body transported, means are provided for raising or lowering the lifting - tongs relatively to the carrier. The tongs A, Fig. 3, are supported by chains C attached to a bell-crank lever J, Fig. 1, which is rocked by rotating the shaft P. Movement of the tongs is limited by drag chains R connected to the side plates S of the under-framework, the front and rear plates of which are curved so as to fit the shell. In a modification, the tongs are supported by the short arm of a lever, and the long arm is locked in its lowered position by a pin. In both constructions, the shell, when raised, may be brought into contact with resilient means, such as a spring pressed plate, for steadying purposes instead of into contact with the curved plates before mentioned.
