Abstract
Coating compositions comprise (a) 35 to 90 parts by weight of a paste composed of a vinyl chloride polymer and a platicizer, (b) 65 to 10 parts by weight of a paste of electrically conductive carbon black and just sufficient plasticizer to form a paste, and (c) 2 to 12 parts of a 15 to 40 weight per cent solution of polymers in organic solvents. The vinyl chloride polymer may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinylacetate, vinyl propionate, vinylidene chloride, acrylic, methacrylic or maleic acids and the esters thereof or vinyl isobutyl ether. Specified carbon blacks are acetylene, furnace and channel blacks. Specified plasticizers are dioctyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate dioctyl adipate, dioctyl sebacate, dioctyl azelate, glycol phthalate and glycol adipate, which may be used together with extenders, e.g. high fatty alcohols, fatty acid esters and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The polymer solution may be a solution of a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, styrene, vinylidene chloride, fumaric acid or maleic acid in esters, ketones or ethers, e.g. ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, methyl glycol acetate, acetone methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, cyclohexanone, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, diisopropyl ether and mixtures thereof. The compositions may also comprise fillers, e.g. chalk, silica, talc, heavy spar and graphite; dyestuffs and pigments; stabilizers and ultra-violet light absorbents; adherence promoters; lubricants; blowing agents cross-linking agents and flame retardants, e.g. antimony trioxide and magnesium carbonate; and may be used for coating wood, metals, wires, plastic foils, knitted and woven fabrics, fleeces, felts and paper to give artificial leathers and antistatic materials, e.g. for mine ducts. Examples describe compositions comprising (1) (a) polyvinyl chloride, antimony oxide, dibutyl tin dilaurate, dioctyl phthalate, fatty acid ester and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate, (b) carbon black, dioctyl phthalate and dioctyl adipate, and (c) a solution of a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/dicarboxylic acid copolymer in ethyl acetate and tetrahydrofuran; (2) a polyvinyl chloride, graphite, dibutyl tin dilaurate, dioctyl phthalate, fatty acid ester and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate, (b) and (1)(b), and (c) a solution of a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/dicarboxylic acid copolymer and an epichlorhydrin - Bisphenol A condensate in methyl isobutyl ketone and methyl glycol acetate, to which an ethyl acetate solution of a condensate of toluylene-2,4-diisocyanate and a polyalcohol is added; (3)(a) as (2)(a), (b) as 1(b), and (c) a solution of a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/dicarboxylic acid copolymer in methyl isobutyl ketone; (4)(a) as (1)(a), (b) as 1(b), and (c) a solution of a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/dicarboxylic acid copolymer and an epichlorhydrin-Bisphenol A condensate in ethyl acetate and methyl isobutyl ketone, and graphite; (5)(a) polyvinyl chloride, graphite, dibutyltin dilaurate, dioctyl phthalate, fatty acid ester, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate and an azo dicarboxylic acid amide, (b) as (1)(b), and (c) as (1)(c), which is applied to grey cotton cloth and cured to give a foamed coating.ALSO:Impermeable and porous substrates are provided with antistatic or electrically conductive coatings by applying thereto and thermally treating pasty compositions comprising (a) 35 to 90 parts by weight of an initial paste composed of polyvinyl chloride and/or vinyle chloride copolymers and a plasticiser therefor, (b) 65 to 10 parts by weight of a carbon black paste prepared from electrically conductive carbon black with an amount of a plasticiser for vinyl chloride polymers just sufficient to form a paste, and (c) 2 to 12 parts by weight of a 15 to 40 weight percent solution of polymers in organic solvents. Specified substrates are paper, wood, metals, wires, plastic foils, woven or knitted fabrics, fleeces and felts. The coating compositions may also comprise adherence promoters, stabilisers, cross-linking or expanding agents, extenders, dye-stuffs and fillers. The compositions may be applied by spreading or dipping, and any excess material removed by doctor blades, squeeze rolls or air stripping. Several coats may be applied. In examples substrates formed by laminating polyvinyl chloride foils to polyester fabrics are coated using a doctor blade with compositions comprising 1 (a) polyvinyl chloride, antimony oxide, dibutyl tin dilaurate, dioctyl phthalate, fatty acid ester and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate, 1 (b) carbon black, dioctyl phthalate and dioctyl adipate and 1 (c) a vinyl chloride / vinyl acetate / dicarboxylic acid terpolymer, ethyl acetate and tetrahydrofuran; 3 (a) polyvinyl chloride, graphite, dibutyl tin dilaurate, dioctyl phthalate, fatty acid ester and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate, 3(b) as 1(b) and 3(c) a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/dicarboxylic acid terpolymer and methyl isobutyl ketone; and 4(a) as 1(a), 4(b) as 1(b) and 4(c) a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/dicarboxylic acid terpolymer, an epichlorohydrin/bis phenol A condensate, graphite, ethyl acetate and methyl isobutyl ketone; two coats being applied to the fabric side and one to the foil side: a nylon fabric substrate is coated on both sides by dipping and again by means of a doctor blade with compositions comprising 2(a) as 3(a), 2(b) as 1(b) and 2(c) the above terpolymer, an epichlorohydrin/bis phenol. A condensate, a toluylene diisocyanate/polyol condensate, methyl isobuty ketone and methyl glycol acetate: grey cotton cloth is coated with the composition of Example 1 and subsequently with a composition comprising polyvinyl chloride, graphite, dibutyl tin dilaurate, dioctyl phthalate, fatty acid ester, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate and an azodicarboxylic acid amide and the paste of 1b and solution of 1c, which layer is expanded by heating: and polyester net fabric is dip coated with a composition comprising polyvinyl chloride, dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl adipate, an alkyl epoxy stearate, polypropylene glycol adipate, trichlorethyl phosphate, triethylene glycol dicaprylate, antimony oxide, dibutyl tin dilaurate and carbon black, and subsequently with a composition as in Example 1.
