Abstract

An extract of hyssop (Gratiola officinalis) is prepared by (1) lixiviating powdered hyssop plant with a solvent comprising MeOH, EtOH, n-PrOH or iso-PrOH optionally diluted with water and completely evaporating the solvent by distillation leaving as residue a crude extract I, (2) boiling crude extract I with a solvent which is an aromatic or a cyclic hydrocarbon or with a chlorinated solvent decanting the hot solution and removing the solvent e.g. by evaporation under vacuum, preferably at 80 DEG C., to give a purified extract II, and (3) dissolving the purified extract II in water, extracting the solution thus obtained with an alkanol having 4 or 5 carbon atoms or a dialkyl ketone having 4 to 6 carbon atoms, separating the aqueous phase and removing the solvent from the organic phase e.g. by azeotropic distillation to give the purified extract III. The solvent used in step (2) is preferably benzene, toluene, a xylene, a petroleum fraction of b. pt. range 55 DEG -130 DEG C., methylene chloride, dichloroethylene, chloroform or trichloroethane. The purified extract III can be dissolved in MeOH and precipitated by the gradual addition of ether to give a pulverulent purified extract. The extract of hyssop possesses a strong laxative action and a small toxicity and is used for the medication of human beings in the form of tablets and pills (which may be sugarcoated), granules and capsules, containing 10 to 100 mg. of the extract per unit. Other laxatives and spasmolytics may also be present in the compositions.
