Abstract
1,057,284. X-ray tubes. HILGER & WATTS Ltd. Sept. 11. 1964 [June 24, 1963], No. 25003/63. Heading H1D. An X-ray tube has a beam of electrons finely focused by focusing elements disposed between a gun and a target, wherein the target consists of at least two areas of different materials and the beam is selectively incident upon one of the areas by movement of the target. The target may be of the form described in Specification 858,416, being rotatable and containing a number of cylinders of different metals; by movement along the axis of the cylinders the beam is incident upon a selected metal. Alternatively, see Fig. 2, the beam is incident upon the end face of a cylindrical target 30, which face may be divided radially or diametrically into two or more regions which are selectively exposed to the electron beam by rotation about the axis of the target. The window tube element 14 may be provided with an outwardly projecting flange (not shown) for mounting a specimen or specimen holder, and the element 14 may have a pumping connection. Focusing is by electric or magnetic lenses. The target may be cooled by directing a cooling fluid past the operating face of the target.
