Abstract

An alloy comprising Mo, at least one of Fe Co Ni and Cr, with or without W or Cu and a dispersed refractory-metal oxide having a free energy of formation at 1000 DEG C of at least 95 Cals per gram atom of oxygen (e.g. Al2O3 *?*r2O3 TiO2 MgO HfO or ThO2) and a particle size of 2-500 m m is prepared by taking a particulate solid of an oxygen containing compound of the metals, other than Mo, to be present in the final alloy having dispersed inseparably therein 0.05 to 10% by volume of the refractory-metal oxygen compound, dispersing this solid in an ammonium molybdate solution having a p.H. of 5.5 to 8.5 to deposit a Mo coating on the surface of the particulate solid, separating the coated particles from the solution and calcining it at 100-550 DEG C the calcined product being finally reduced by H2, C, CO or hydrocarbon gases at 450 DEG to 1200 DEG C. The particulate solid may be produced by coprecipitation of the hydrous oxide of the refractory metal and the alloying metal particles.
