Abstract

1,052,514. Shredding apparatus. FRENCH OIL MILL MACHINERY CO. March 5, 1964 [March 11, 1963], No. 9456/64. Heading B2A. A screw press such as is used for removing fluids from latex comprises a feed worm 22, Fig. 1, extending on a shaft 20 through a cage 10, to press the material in the cage through an orifice 30, Fig. 2, and, outside the cage, a shredder 60 coaxial with the shaft 20 and having blades 65 rotated past the orifice to tear material discharging through it. As described, the cage 10 may have drainage openings and an inlet hopper 12, and the discharge orifice 30 is defined by a sleeve 27 on the shaft and a ring 14 threaded on a mounting ring 17, which is adjustable by operation of a worm and gear adjuster 18 to vary its size. The feed worm 22 has screw flights 24 spaced by collars 25 on the shaft 20, one or more of the collars being tapered as at 25a to provide a decrease in the area through which the material must pass between these collars and the cage walls. The collars have stationary abutments or breaker lugs 32 mounted opposite them, extending inward from the cage walls to prevent rotation of the material being forced over the collars. The sleeve 27 carries one or more lugs 55, which rotate with the shaft within the discharge ring 14. The shredder 60 is formed in halves connected by bolts 61 and attached to a skeleton supporting sleeve 62, and the blades 65 have axially-extending root portions 65, Fig. 3, and helically-arranged forward cutter portions 67, which may be inclined toward the direction of rotation of the shredder. A single motor is used to drive the shaft 20 through gearing and the shredder in the opposite direction through a belt-andpulley drive, so that the blades 65 and lugs 55 rotate opposite to each other with a clearance 80, and tear the material which is discharged through the orifice.
