Abstract

A composition for forming a varnish coat on articles of polyethylene, polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride or copolymers of said compounds comprises a partially copolymerized mixture of an acrylic monomer with an ethylenically unsaturated oil-modified glyceryl phthalate condensation resin and a polymerization catalyst, an oil-modified epoxy resin, a low molecular weight polyethylene, a plasticizer and a solvent comprising a mixture of high-boiling saturated hydrocarbons. In an example the composition consisted of a mixture of methyl methacrylate and a ricinoleic acid-modified glyceryl phthalate condensation product, a ricinoleic acid-modified epoxy resin obtained from bis-phenol A and epichlorhydrin, low molecular weight ethylene polymers, a plasticizer obtained by esterification of adipic acid and/or sebacic acid, paraffin oil, cobalt naphthenate, ethylene glycol monoethyl ester, petroleum spirit and high boiling aromatic hydrocarbons. Pigments may be included in the composition.
