Abstract

1,048,264. Welding by fusion. D.A. DUDKO, R. M. GORDON, O. O. ROZENBERG, and M. G. BELIFOR. July 17, 1964 [June 7, 1963], No. 22733/63. Heading B3R. An electroslag welding machine comprises a pair of carriages 1, 2 propelled up each side of the gap between plates to be welded, a pair of melt retaining shoes 13 suspended by links 9, 10 pivotally connected to the carriages 1, 2 and a part 14 extending through the gap and resiliently drawing the links 9, 10 together. The pivoted links enable the machine to weld curved plates. The shoes 13 are water-cooled and of copper and are adjustably connected to the links 9, 10 to allow inclined welds to be made. The rollers 5<SP>1</SP> on the carriage 1 are driven, have flanges projecting into the gap and have axes inclined at 1 . . . 1À5 degrees to the horizontal. The carriages 1, 2 are drawn together by a spring on a tie-bar 3 and a member 4 fixed to the carriage 1 transmits vertical forces to the carriage 2. The electrode 6 is fed through a curved contact and guide 8 oscillated by a variable stroke mechanism 16. The machine consists of four sub-assemblies interconnectable, e.g. by pegs.
