Abstract
1,047,825. Making electrical components. PLESSEY-UK Ltd. Feb. 4, 1964 [Feb 6, 1963], No. 4729/64. Heading B3A. [Also in Divisions F2 and H2] A metal component, such as an electrical contact sleeve or pin 7, Fig. 2, is anchored in a through-hole or a cavity in a body 1 of insulating material by deforming a washer 10, Fig. 3, which is first slid over a shank 8 of the pin until it is adjacent to notches in the shank when it is deformed, e.g. to V-form 10<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 2, by a forked tool 12, Fig. 3, so that parts of its inner edge enter the notches. The washer 10 and body hole are shaped for a flat contact pin 7, but the contact may be a pin or sleeve of circular or oval cross-section so that the washer has an aperture (and the body hole is) of corresponding shape, the washer edge being elongated or circular but not necessarily corresponding to the aperture shape. The deformation line 16 may be transverse to or in line with, Fig. 3c (not shown), an elongated slot. The pin 7 may have shoulders 9 engaging corresponding shoulders in the hole in the body 1 and the hole may have an enlarged portion 5 with a doublesloping end as shown to assist in deforming the washer. The marginal portion 17, Fig. 3c, of the washer may bend to lie against the wall of the portion 5. If the flange so formed extends towards the open end of the portion 5 it may be gripped by a tool for release. If it extends towards the constricted end and the open end has an internal ledge, Fig. 1 (not shown), the washer is anchored unreleasably behind the ledge. This washer, Fig. 3c, may be used to anchor a pin in a cavity, i.e. a hole which does not extend through the body 1. A number of metal components may be inserted in one step into holes in a moulded synthetic resin body 1 and the washers 10 introduced into the holes together or in succession into the holes at the other side of the body and then deformed by pressing or striking tools together or in succession. Wedge formation, Fig. 1 (not shown) on the body between the washered ends of the pins lengthen the surface leakage path.
